We received some driftwood from a friend that lives by a lake. I knew as soon as he gave them to us that I needed to use these for my BioActive terrariums.
Of course, they needed to be cleaned and sanitized before putting them in with my scaly kids. I did lots of research on this subject and learned that there are several different ways of doing this.
This is how we ended up cleaning our driftwood -
I boiled a large pot of water on my stove. When it came to a rolling boil, I placed the wood in the pot. My pot wasn’t big enough for the size of wood that I had to clean so I did it in two steps. I boiled one half of the wood for one hour and then flipped the wood over and boiled the other end of the branches for another hour.
The next step was drying the wood. I put all the wood in a bin and placed it right beside my patio door, inside the house. That area of my house gets lots of direct sunlight in the afternoon. The wood took a few days to dry completely. I flipped the pieces over a couple of times per day so both sides would dry.
Now I have some great pieces for my terrariums. So much better than paying 40.00 for a branch!
